How long does it take for a F-1 student to complete the opt?
Full announcement available on the USCIS website. F-1 students may participate in up to 12 months of post-completion OPT, which must be completed within 14 months from the end of their program. Due to the delays at the lockbox, some applicants may only be eligible for a shortened period of OPT within that 14-month period.

What happens if I Lose my F-1 visa?
Your F-1 status will be terminated, and your I-20 will be invalid. You must request a new I-20 before returning. You must apply for a new F-1 visa to return even if your current F-1 visa appears valid. Your I-20, SEVIS record, and F-1 status will be terminated.
Can a student apply for a new F-1 visa?
If a student’s F-1 visa has expired and the student wishes to travel outside the United States, a new F-1 visa must be obtained before re-entering the United States. Students who need to apply for a new visa should consult BIO prior to travel to discuss the visa application process and possible risks.
Can you apply for a new F-1 visa if your opt has expired?

When to apply for an F1 visa extension?
Once an F-1 student is working in a post completion OPT, the STEM OPT extension allows students with certain science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) degrees to apply for a 24 month F1 visa extension to their OPT authorization bringing the total maximum F-1 OPT visa status period to 36 months.
