Q&A

Can a teacher call you dumb?

Can a teacher call you dumb?

It is unprofessional, uncaring, and yes, plain “dumb,” for a teacher to do this—if it happened in my school, I would have a brief conversation with the teacher which would result in a letter of apology to the student/parents involved. There is no place for this, and would lower my opinion of anyone who would do this.

What did Marching Band Teach Me as a kid?

The teamwork in marching band is about individual and group self-improvement, competing with self, comparing results with self over time. Camaraderie. Shared experiences over time build relationships and friendships. A job transfer moved our family across the country as my sophomore was ending her 8th grade year.

Do you think teachers want to hear from parents?

All teachers want to hear from parents. But there are some things parents say that simply drive teachers crazy. Writer Natalie Schwartz, who conducts workshops on parent-teacher relationships, says she’s not surprised the dynamic can sometimes be stressful. Parents are passionate about their kids, and teachers are equally devoted to their work.

Why do parents say bad things about teachers?

Parents are passionate about their kids, and teachers are equally devoted to their work. When emotions run high, sometimes the things parents say don’t come out the best way. Most parents work well with their child’s teacher, but Schwartz says the few exceptions can make life difficult for the teacher, the parent, and the child.

Why do kids quit playing music in school?

It’s important that all students play music that is aligned to their interests in addition to other pieces that are worked on in school. Other activities are pulling at the child.  Between art lessons, sports, karate, and other activities, parents grow weary of having “one more thing” to be on top of schedule-wise.

How often do students quit their musical instrument?

Every year almost 100% of public school students begin an instrument through their school’s music program (if a program exists).  One or two years later, more than 50% of students quit; unable to enjoy all that music education has to offer for the rest of their K-12 schooling, if not beyond.

Why do students not know how to get better at music?

Students don’t know how to get better.  Without the proper tools and practice habits to get better at anything, students will become frustrated and want to quit.  It is the role of music educators and parents to give students ownership over their learning.
